In August 2020, we welcomed 8 hens from an “organic” farm. They lived in buildings with a mini concrete courtyard for the outside… They arrived featherless, anemic and only knew how to eat flour… The seeds had to be crushed, the vegetables pureed and their allow time to discover real life: scratching the earth, taking dust baths, basking in the sun…
Worn out by daily egg laying, they are usually slaughtered around 18 months of age. 4 of them left us during the first year. 3 cancers and 1 salpingitis. The only way to save their lives is to have hormonal implants placed to stop ovulation. What our vet had to learn to do…
Think about it if you buy eggs, even organic ones. The pretty photo on the box is marketing. Not life.
In 2021, 4 hens joined us, from private individuals who were getting rid of them because they were no longer laying eggs, as well as 2 roosters threatened with pan: Joaquin and Phoenix. Then 4 other hens found on a vacant lot.
